Uganda has begun five days of mourning following a fire that destroyed the royal tombs of the country's largest historic kingdom. The blaze on Tuesday sparked angry riots in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, leaving three people dead. The country's presidential guard opened fire at members of the Baganda ethnic group on Wednesday, after rioters tried to stop Yoweri Museveni, the Ugandan president, from visiting the destroyed tombs, officials said. |

August 7, 1998, was, for me, a time of trauma beyond the terror attack. That week someone had come to my house and stolen my car. It was my first-ever car. I had gone to Dubai and personally scoured the backstreets of Sharjah for it.
I fell in love the moment I saw it on that dusty, hot sidestreet. It was a Toyota Corolla AE 92, pearl white, spotless inside and outside, with conspicuous Volkswagen eight spoke alloys and large Panasonic speakers. I remember sitting in the maroon interior, the AC ice-cold and marvelling at what a lucky man I was to find this beauty.

L-R. Gideon Bala, Idris Oyibo, and Soji Smart were arrested while attempting to hijack a trailer. Photo: PETER NKANGA
A discharged soldier, Idris Oyinbo, and a dismissed police officer, Gideon Baba, both went to the Apapa Wharf on March 15, 2010 with one mission in mind: commandeer and escort a trailer load of bags of sugar to awaiting buyers in Mushin, a suburb in Lagos State.
At about 6:30pm the same day, the duo, partially dressed in army and police outfits, met with their sponsor, one Kingsley (at large), who is believed to have masterminded the operation. In turn, Kingsley introduced them to Soji Smart, who would drive the trailer to their destination.

Democracy, they say, is government of the people, for the people, and by the people. I feel certain that it is not for a lack of a better choice of words that the word "people" appears three times in the definition. By this definition, the proponent, I believe, intended to state clearly, leaving out shadows of doubt, as to what constituted the most important ingredient of a democracy - people!
Unfortunately, a negative trend is rocking my society, an evil cloud is hovering over the land blocking out the light. The result, a dullness, a situation where the people have forgotten that they are all that matter in a democracy, and everything is of them and by them. By implication, proponents in our society today would very likely define democracy as: government of the leaders, for the leaders, and by the leaders.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek concedes their World Cup aspirations could be cut short by West African side Ghana. He said their Group D opponents for South Africa 2010 are unpredictable looking at their outstanding performance at the Nations Cup in Angola.

Verbeek noted that although his side are fully focused on Germany, the Black Stars remain a torn in his flesh that he must deal with.
He told FIFA.com: “I think Serbia will actually be the crucial game. The final group game will be the decisive one. Germany, Ghana and Serbia; all three opponents have three totally different ways of playing football.
“So at this moment we are fully focused on Germany and then we have six days to prepare ourselves for Ghana, who showed again at the Africa Cup of Nations that even with a lot of players who may not make the final cut they still have a fantastic team and can get the results.
“I think, watching the Africa Cup of Nations, Australians realised Ghana will be a difficult team to beat. And Serbia have nothing to lose, so that makes for a dangerous opponent. Especially if you see the quality of their players and their qualification campaign.”

There is a classic scene in Monty Python’s film The Life of Brian where the hero sets off in search of a secret band of insurgents. “Are you the Judean People’s Front,” he asks a group of malcontents. “The Judean People’s Front!” they reply in disgust. “We’re the People’s Front of Judea … The only people we hate more than the Romans are the f***ing Judean People’s Front … And the Judean Popular People’s Front. Splitters!”
